The countdown to the most anticipated event of the year in the world of triathlon has officially begun, and without a doubt, one of the most important events in world sport, the Grand Final of the World Series which, for the first time, will be held in Spain, specifically in Pontevedra.
The city celebrated the big event in a crowded City Hall square that only has 200 days left to see the world’s best triathletes in its streets, making it the epicenter of World Triathlon.
“Pontevedra will once again be an example, it will once again write a new chapter of its history as the first city in the country to host the Grand Final of the Triathlon World Series, an event that can bring more than 10,000 people,” said Miguel Anxo Fernandez Lores, mayor of Pontevedra.
He added: “Today we’re going to fly a flag that 10 years ago we wouldn’t have dreamed of doing, but we were able to move forward as a city, we set a benchmark, something that opens doors to the world. This event is a reward that has made joint work possible, work between institutions, sports technicians, everyday workers, municipal bodies and more”
The event, which was attended by all the political institutions, was also attended by athletes such as Pablo Dapena and the current world champion of paratriathlon and medalist in the Tokyo Olympics Susana Rodríguez, who was delighted with the news that Pontevedra will host this great event: “It makes me very excited that we have, for the first time in Spain, this Grand Final of the World Series and as a Galician, even more so that it is in Pontevedra. It seemed impossible to think we’d have the best triathletes in the world here, but now it’s a reality and I’m looking forward to it.”
The end of the celebration was closed with the concert of the music group Tanxugueiras which delighted all those present in the town square, where there is already a flag that bears witness to the September sports festival.
The Grand Final of the World Series of Pontevedra (which will open Age Group registration next Tuesday, March 7) will be the cherry on the cake for a historic 2023 for Spanish triathlon, as the 2023 Ibiza Multi-Sport Triathlon World Championships were also held from April 29 to May 7 and the European Triathlon Championships in Madrid from June 2 to 4.
