French-German dominance in the men’s elite, won by Coninx close to Hellwig and Le Corre

The Portuguese, Batista, came thirteenth, Vilaça fourteenth and the Galician Serrat thirtieth

Galician Antonio Serrat finishes in 30th place in the Pontevedra World Champs. He crossed the finish line of the CGTD 9 seconds behind the race favorite, the British Alex Yee, who was wearing the number one and finished in twenty-ninth position.

A spectacular race, full of people in the surroundings of Lérez and in the CGTD and in the historic center. Pontevedra responded again in the street on a sunny and pleasant Saturday afternoon. The Lérez water was over 20ºC and it was not possible to use a wetsuit.

Serrat was also the first Spaniard to cross the finish line in Pontevedra and the Portuguese Vilaça, who started in third, was in 14th place, behind the other Portuguese athlete Ricardo Batista, who raced in Pontevedra wearing number 45.

The race was completed by three athletes at the same time, in one hour, 42 minutes and 22 seconds: the Frenchman Dorian Coninx, who was fifth overall in the series, the German Tim Hellwig (tenth) and the fellow Frenchman Pierre Le Corre (eighth). An immense final dominated by Europeans, as the first non-European was the Australian Matthew Hauser, who came in seventh position.

At 5:20 p.m., the men’s elite started with the swimming segment in the Lérez. First out of the water was Hauser, commanding a group of 18 and with Hayden Wilde suffering a penalty for leaving his cap on the pontoon that would eventually put him out of contention for the championship.

It was the turn of the first transition and the bike segment at a very high pace removing Blummenfelt, Alex Yee and Wilde from the group of favourites.

And with the run, Coninx’s moment appeared. The Frenchman ran behind the first positions, Hellwig and Pearson, hand in hand with his compatriot Le Corre.

In the last laps, cheered on by the public that filled the stands of the stadium, Conninx began to prepare for his victory in Pontevedra by narrowly prevailing in a very tight sprint with Tim Hellwig and Le Corre.

Everything was ready for Pontevedra to be the perfect setting for a battle for the world title between the Brit, Yee, the New Zealander, Wilde and the Portuguese, Vasco Vilaça, but once again it became clear that the triathlon takes no prisoners and that the race ends up putting the each in their place.

Coninx was proclaimed the new King of World Triathlon, while Alex Yee, who led the classification until this last stop of the World Series, had to settle for runner-up after finishing 29th in Pontevedra and Bergere with the bronze after finishing 4th in this Grand Final.

Of the Spaniards, after Antonio Serrat (30th), there were Genis Grau (37th), Sergio Baxter (45th). Roberto Sanchez Mantecón was ranked 47th and David Castro 57th.
