The Pontevedra 2023 Grand Final of the Triathlon World Series managed to pass the World Triahtlon sustainability checks with flying colors, thanks to the measures that the Championship Organization has been pushing to guarantee a sustainable event that respects the environment.
The mayor of Pontevedra, Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, was very satisfied with the World Triathlon verdict, stressing that the city is already an environment that is very respectful of the planet: “We are very happy because it is a recognition of the work we have been doing for many years in this area Pontevedra is a fume-free city, we comply 365 days with the air quality criteria of the WHO and we are going to keep moving forward without any doubt.”
Luis López Diéguez, president of the Provincial Council, also wanted to assess the policy of sustainability: “the province of Pontevedra is a reference in the care of the environment, in sustainable mobility and in the organization of sporting events. This certification represents a new recognition of this work and one more reason to continue working in this direction”.
He also pointed out that “the government of the Provincial Council not only has accessibility and equality as its banner in all the events it organizes, it also pays special attention to the correct management of waste and the promotion of mobility that gives priority to travel on foot or by bicycle over the use of motor vehicles with the aim of reducing the emission of polluting gases and remains a model of reference in all areas”.
Among the measures carried out by the organization of the Grand Final, aspects such as accessibility, equality, waste management, the promotion of local consumption, the promotion of sustainable travel to reduce the carbon footprint, its calculation and compensation for it stand out through a forest plantation that will take place at the end of the year in the mountains of Pontevedra.
“In less than five years, Galicia and Pontevedra have hosted the 2019 MultisportITU World Championships, the 2022 Triathlon World Cup and now the Grand Final of the Triathlon World Series. This fills us with pride, but also with experience and guarantees to be able take on any organizational challenge” declared the first vice-president and Councilor for the Presidency, Justice and Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Diego Calvo, who added that the sustainable behavior of the Grand Final of the World Series is new evidence of how Galicia takes care of its sport, but above all, how it takes care of and respects its surroundings and its environment
“My congratulations to the organizing committee of the event, this distinction is very important in the world of triathlon because it is a sport that is done in the middle of nature”, commented Marisol Casado, President of World Triahtlon, while for José Hidalgo, President of Spanish Federation of Trialón “getting this recognition at an international level is something that we are very satisfied with, because we have already worked so that the national events are an example of sustainability and we would not be credible if this work was not transferred to the great event of the world triathlon. This recognition tells us that we are going in the right direction”.
